FURTHER ELABORATION ON HOW CHRIST IS REVEALED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT.
These also include most of the Messianic prophecies which speak of the Person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Genesis:
The pre-existent Christ, the living Word (Logos) was actively involved in the creation process.
Joh 1:1 In the beginning, was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2 He was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
Melchizedek the king-priest of Genesis 14 is a type of Jesus Christ our King and High Priest (confirmed in Hebrews 6:20).
Heb 6:20 where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
The greatest revelation of Christ is found in the cutting of the covenant with Abraham of whom Christ is the ultimate fulfilment.
Messianic prophecies:
Christ as the “Seed” of Abraham is the “Seed” of the woman who will bruise the serpent’s head
Gen 3:14 The LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly, you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life;
Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel."
Gen 49:10 "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh, comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
Exodus
Moses is a type of Christ, Aaron is a type of Jesus Christ as the High Priest and the Passover indicates that Jesus is the Lamb of God that was slain for our redemption.
In Exodus 3 God reveals Himself to Moses as the great “I AM” – a revelation that finds its final culmination in Christ when He boldly declares in the Book of John:
“I AM”
-
The Way, the Truth and the Life
-
The Good Shepherd
-
The Bread of Life
-
The True Vine
-
The Resurrection and the Life
-
The Door of the sheep
-
The Light of the World
Numbers:
In this Book, Jesus is portrayed as the Provider. (Exod 17:6; Num 20:11; Num 21:16)
Paul is referring to Christ as the spiritual Rock that followed the Israelites through the wilderness and provided them spiritual drink.
1Co 10:1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea;
1Co 10:2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
1Co 10:3 and all ate the same spiritual food;
1Co 10:4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.
Num 21:8 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a standard; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten when he looks at it, he will live."
Num 21:9 And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.
Fulfilled in
Joh 3:14 "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up;
Joh 3:15 so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.
Messianic prophecies:
Balaam prophesied the following, which the Jews believe refer to the coming Messiah
Num 24:15 He took up his discourse and said, "The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor, And the oracle of the man whose eye is opened,
Num 24:16 The oracle of him who hears the words of God, And knows the knowledge of the Most High, Who sees the vision of the Almighty, Falling down, yet having his eyes uncovered.
Num 24:17 "I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; A star shall come forth from Jacob, A scepter shall rise from Israel,
Deuteronomy:
Messianic prophecies:
Deu 18:15 "The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him.
Deu 18:18 'I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.
God, Himself confirmed it
Mar 9:7 Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, "This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!"
Deu 32:43 "Rejoice, O nations, with His people; For He will avenge the blood of His servants, And will render vengeance on His adversaries, And will atone for His land and His people."
Jesus compared Himself with Moses in:
Joh 5:46 "For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me.
Joh 5:47 "But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"
Jesus Himself often quoted from Deuteronomy.
Deu 30:12 "It is not in heaven, that you should say, 'Who will go up to heaven for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?'
Deu 30:13 "Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, 'Who will cross the sea for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?'
Deu 30:14 "But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may observe it.
Quoted by Paul
Rom 10:6 But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: "do not say in your heart, 'who will ascend into heaven?' (that is, to bring Christ down),
Rom 10:7 or 'who will descend into the abyss?' (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead)."
Rom 10:8 But what does it say? "the word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart"--that is, the word of faith which we are preaching,
Rom 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
Rom 10:10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
Joshua:
Joshua himself is a type of Christ. His name means “Yahweh is Salvation” and this is the Hebrew equivalent to the Greek “Jesus”. Joshua led the people of God to take possession of their promised inheritance, in the same way, that Jesus Christ leads us into possession of eternal life (life without limitations).
1 Samuel:
1Sa 2:10 "Those who contend with the LORD will be shattered; Against them He will thunder in the heavens, The LORD will judge the ends of the earth, And He will give strength to His king, And will exalt the horn of His anointed."
2 Samuel:
2Sa 7:12 "When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom.
2Sa 7:13 "He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
2Sa 7:14 "I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men,
2Sa 7:15 but My loving kindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
2Sa 7:16 "Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever."'"
2Sa 7:17 In accordance with all these words and all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
1 Chronicles:
1Ch 17:13 "I will be his father and he shall be My son; and I will not take My loving kindness away from him, as I took it from him who was before you.
1Ch 17:14 "But I will settle him in My house and in My kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever."'"
1Ch 17:15 According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
Psalms:
There are a number of Messianic Psalms which speak of the Person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Sometimes a whole Psalm applies to Christ, e.g., Psalm 22. Sometimes a paragraph, e.g., Psalm 40:6-10. Sometimes several verses, e.g.,Psalm 69:4, 9, 21. Sometimes a single verse, e.g. Psalm 41:9
The references to the Messiah in the Psalms do not follow in sequence or in chronological order:
Psalm 2 is an introduction to the whole collection, giving a prophetic outline of the birth and reign of the Messiah.
Psalm 40 refers to His incarnation;
Psalm 22 to His crucifixion; and
Psalm 16 to His resurrection.
In this exposition I am following the chronological order in the life of the Lord Jesus Christ described in sixteen Messianic Psalms:

(2) Psalm 40: The Incarnation;
(3) Psalm 91: The Temptation;

(13) Psalm 72: The Millennial Reign;
(14) Psalm 89: The Davidic Covenant;
(15) Psalm 102: The Unchangeable One; and
(16) Psalm 118: The Headstone of the Corner.
Proverbs:
The profound Book about “WISDOM” – not a direct reference to Christ, but
Proverbs 8:23-31 certainly gives a description of Jesus Christ, who was “in the beginning with God” (John 1:2), who is “the wisdom of God” (1Cor 1:24), and “became for us wisdom” (1Cor 1:30).
Pro 8:23 "From everlasting I was established, From the beginning, from the earliest times of the earth.
Pro 8:24 "When there were no depths I was brought forth When there were no springs abounding with water.
Pro 8:25 "Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills, I was brought forth;
Pro 8:26 While He had not yet made the earth and the fields, Nor the first dust of the world.
Pro 8:27 "When He established the heavens, I was there, When He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep,

Pro 8:30 Then I was beside Him, as a master workman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him,
Pro 8:31 Rejoicing in the world, His earth, And having my delight in the sons of men.
Pro 30:4 Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name or His son's name? Surely you know!
Isaiah:

Isa 49:3 He said to Me, "You are My Servant, Israel, In Whom I will show My glory."
Isa 49:4 But I said, "I have toiled in vain, I have spent My strength for nothing and vanity; Yet surely the justice due to Me is with the LORD And My reward with My God."
Isa 49:5 And now says the LORD, who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant, To bring Jacob back to Him so that Israel might be gathered to Him (For I am honoured in the sight of the LORD, And My God is My strength),
Isa 49:6 He says, "It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also make You a light of the nations So that My salvation may reach to the end of the earth."
Isa 49:7 Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel and its Holy One, To the despised One, To the One abhorred by the nation, To the Servant of rulers, "Kings will see and arise, Princes will also bow down, Because of the LORD who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen You."

Isa 52:15 Thus He will sprinkle many nations, Kings will shut their mouths on account of Him; For what had not been told them they will see, And what they had not heard they will understand.
The amazing Chapter 53 of Isaiah
Isa 53:1 Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
Isa 53:2 For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.
Isa 53:3 He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Isa 53:4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.
Isa 53:5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging, we are healed.
Isa 53:6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way, But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
Isa 53:7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth.
Isa 53:8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
Isa 53:9 His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
Isa 53:10 But the LORD was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.
Isa 53:11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge, the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities.
Isa 53:12 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors, Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors.
Isa 55:3 "Incline your ear and come to Me. Listen, that you may live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you, According to the faithful mercies shown to David.
Isa 55:4 "Behold, I have made him a witness to the peoples, A leader and commander for the peoples.
Isa 59:16 And He saw that there was no man, And was astonished that there was no one to intercede; Then His own arm brought salvation to Him, And His righteousness upheld Him.
Isa 59:17 He put on righteousness like a breastplate, And a helmet of salvation on His head;
Isa 59:20 "A Redeemer will come to Zion, And to those who turn from transgression in Jacob," declares the LORD.
Isa 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners;
Isa 61:2 To proclaim the favourable year of the LORD And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,
Isa 61:3 To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.
Isa 61:4 Then they will rebuild the ancient ruins, They will raise up the former devastations; And they will repair the ruined cities, The desolations of many generations.
Isa 65:17 "For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, And the former things will not be remembered or come to mind.
Jeremiah:
Jer 23:5 "Behold, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; And He will reign as king and act wisely And do justice and righteousness in the land.
Jer 23:6 "In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell securely; And this is His name by which He will be called, 'The LORD our righteousness.'
Jer 31:15 Thus says the LORD, "A voice is heard in Ramah, Lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; She refuses to be comforted for her children Because they are no more."
Jer 31:31 "Behold, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,
Jer 31:32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them," declares the LORD.
Jer 31:33 "But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the LORD, "I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
Jer 31:34 "They will not teach again, each man his neighbour and each man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them," declares the LORD, "for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more."
Jer 32:38 "They shall be My people, and I will be their God;
Jer 32:39 and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me always, for their own good and for the good of their children after them.
Jer 32:40 "I will make an everlasting covenant with them that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will put the fear of Me in their hearts so that they will not turn away from Me.
Jer 32:41 "I will rejoice over them to do them good and will faithfully plant them in this land with all My heart and with all My soul.
Jer 33:15 'In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch of David to spring forth; and He shall execute justice and righteousness on the earth.
Jer 33:16 'In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell in safety; and this is the name by which she will be called: the LORD is our righteousness.'
Ezekiel:
Eze 17:22 Thus says the Lord GOD, " I will also take a sprig from the lofty top of the cedar and set it out; I will pluck from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one and I will plant it on a high and lofty mountain.
Eze 17:23 "On the high mountain of Israel I will plant it, that it may bring forth boughs and bear fruit and become a stately cedar. And birds of every kind will nest under it; they will nest in the shade of its branches.
Eze 17:24 "All the trees of the field will know that I am the LORD; I bring down the high tree, exalt the low tree, dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish. I am the LORD; I have spoken, and I will perform it."
Eze 21:26 thus says the Lord GOD, 'Remove the turban and take off the crown; this will no longer be the same. Exalt that which is low and abase that which is high.
Eze 21:27 'A ruin, a ruin, a ruin, I will make it. This also will be no more until He comes whose right it is, and I will give it to Him.'
Eze 34:22 therefore, I will deliver My flock, and they will no longer be a prey; and I will judge between one sheep and another.
Eze 34:23 "Then I will set over them one shepherd, My servant David, and he will feed them; he will feed them himself and be their shepherd.

Daniel:
Christ is seen as the “fourth man” standing with Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego in the fiery furnace in Daniel 3:25
Dan 3:25 He said, "Look! I see four men loosed and walking about in the midst of the fire without harm, and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods!"
Dan 7:13 "I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him.
Dan 7:14 "And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations and men of every language Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away, And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed.
Dan 7:27 'Then the sovereignty, the dominion and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One; His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him.'
Dan 9:24 "Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place.
Dan 9:25 "So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress.
Dan 9:26 "Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined.
Dan 9:27 "And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate."
Dan 10:5 I lifted my eyes and looked, and behold, there was a certain man dressed in linen, whose waist was girded with a belt of pure gold of Uphaz.

Jonah:
Jon 1:17 And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights.
Jesus referred to this passage and applied it to Himself
(Mat 12:39 But He answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign, and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet;
Mat 12:40 for just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth .)

Mic 4:2 Many nations will come and say, "Come and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD And to the house of the God of Jacob, That He may teach us about His ways And that we may walk in His paths." For from Zion will go forth the law, Even the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

Hab 1:5 " Look among the nations! Observe! Be astonished! Wonder! Because I am doing something in your days-- You would not believe if you were told.
Hab 2:1 I will stand on my guard post And station myself on the rampart, And I will keep watch to see what He will speak to me, And how I may reply when I am reproved.
Hab 2:2 Then the LORD answered me and said, "Record the vision And inscribe it on tablets, That the one who reads it may run.

Hab 3:13 You went forth for the salvation of Your people, For the salvation of Your anointed. You struck the head of the house of the evil To lay him open from thigh to neck. Selah.
Zephaniah:
Zep 3:14 Shout for joy, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Zep 3:15 The LORD has taken away His judgments against you, He has cleared away your enemies. The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; You will fear disaster no more.
Zep 3:17 "The LORD your God is in your midst, A victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.
Zep 3:20 "At that time I will bring you in, Even at the time when I gather you together; Indeed, I will give you renown and praise Among all the peoples of the earth, When I restore your fortunes before your eyes," Says the LORD.
The context describes several things which will take place:
Judgments for sin will be taken away (vs 14). Our sins are forgiven in Christ and we have given the hope of heaven instead of prospect for eternal judgment (I John 4:17,18).
He has cleared away your enemies (vs 14). Christ Himself has conquered death, (I Corinthians 15:24-26).
Rejoice and exult with all your heart (vs 14). Rejoice in the Lord always (Philippians 4:4).
The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst (vs 15). Our King lives in us today and He assures us of victory (Galatians 2:20).
Even at that time, I will gather you together (vs 20). It is the Lord who adds us to His body or sets us as spiritual stones into His house ((I Peter 2:5-10).
When I restore your fortunes before your eyes (vs 20). In Jesus we have an eternal treasure which does not corrode nor can it be stolen, an inheritance that fades not away, an imperishable crown - the unfathomable riches of Christ (Ephesians 3:8).
Haggai:
Hag 2:6 "For thus says the LORD of hosts, 'Once more in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea also and the dry land.
Hag 2:7 'I will shake all the nations, and they will come with the wealth of all nations, and I will fill this house with glory,' says the LORD of hosts.
Hag 2:8 'The silver is Mine and the gold is Mine,' declares the LORD of hosts.
Hag 2:9 'The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,' says the LORD of hosts, 'and in this place, I will give peace,' declares the LORD of hosts."
Hag 2:23 'On that day,' declares the LORD of hosts, 'I will take you, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, My servant,' declares the LORD, 'and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you,'" declares the LORD of hosts.
Zechariah:
Zechariah is sometimes referred to as the most Messianic of all the Old Testament Books. Herewith some amazing prophecies about Jesus Christ
The Messiah as the Lord’s Servant the Branch
Zec 3:8 'Now listen, Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who are sitting in front of you--indeed they are men who are a symbol, for behold, I am going to bring in My servant the Branch.
The Messiah as the Man the Branch
Zec 6:12 "Then say to him, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, "Behold, a man whose name is Branch, for He will branch out from where He is; and He will build the temple of the LORD.
The Messiah as both King and Priest
Zec 6:13 "Yes, it is He who will build the temple of the LORD, and He who will bear the honour and sit and rule on His throne. Thus, He will be a priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace will be between the two offices."
The Messiah – His entrance into Jerusalem
Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
The Messiah as the True Shepherd
Zec 11:4 Thus says the LORD my God, "Pasture the flock doomed to slaughter.
Zec 11:5 "Those who buy them slay them and go unpunished, and each of those who sell them says, 'Blessed be the LORD, for I have become rich!' And their own shepherds have no pity on them.
Zec 11:6 "For I will no longer have pity on the inhabitants of the land," declares the LORD; "but behold, I will cause the men to fall, each into another's power and into the power of his king; and they will strike the land, and I will not deliver them from their power."
Zec 11:7 So I pastured the flock doomed to slaughter, hence the afflicted of the flock. And I took for myself two staffs: the one I called Favor and the other I called Union; so I pastured the flock.
Zec 11:8 Then I annihilated the three shepherds in one month, for my soul was impatient with them, and their soul also was weary of me.
Zec 11:9 Then I said, "I will not pasture you. What is to die, let it die, and what is to be annihilated, let it be annihilated; and let those who are left eat one another's flesh."
Zec 11:10 I took my staff Favor and cut it in pieces, to break my covenant which I had made with all the peoples.
Zec 11:11 So it was broken on that day, and thus the afflicted of the flock who were watching me realized that it was the word of the LORD.
The Messiah betrayed for thirty pieces of silver
Zec 11:12 I said to them, "If it is good in your sight, give me my wages; but if not, never mind!" So they weighed out thirty shekels of silver as my wages.
Zec 11:13 Then the LORD said to me, "Throw it to the potter, that magnificent price at which I was valued by them." So I took the thirty shekels of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of the LORD.
The Messiah – His crucifixion
Zec 12:10 "I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.
Zec 13:1 "In that day a fountain will be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for impurity.
The Messiah – His sufferings
Zec 13:6 "And one will say to him, 'What are these wounds between your arms?' Then he will say, 'Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.'
Zec 13:7 "Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, And against the man, My Associate," Declares the LORD of hosts. "Strike the Shepherd that the sheep may be scattered, And I will turn My hand against the little ones.
The Messiah – His Second Advent
Zec 14:4 In that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which is in front of Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives will be split in its middle from east to west by a very large valley, so that half of the mountain will move toward the north and the other half toward the south.
Malachi:
Referring to John the Baptist
Mal 3:1 "Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me.
Referring to Jesus Christ
And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming," says the LORD of hosts.
Mal 3:2 "But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap.
Mal 3:3 " He will sit as a smelter and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, so that they may present to the LORD offerings in righteousness.
Mal 3:4 "Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.
Mal 4:2 But to you who fear My name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise With healing in His wings; And you shall go out And grow fat like stall-fed calves. (NKJV)
MESSIANIC PROPHECIES – A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE
A list of some of the Messianic prophecies from a different angle
I am presenting it in the following order:
First the topic, then the Old Testament prediction, and then the New Testament fulfilment:
The seed of the woman
Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel."
Gal 4:4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
The seed of Abraham
Gen 12:3 I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you, and in you, all the families of the earth shall be blessed."
Gal 3:16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of many, but as of one, "And to your Seed," who is Christ.
The Tribe of Judah
Gen 49:10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh, comes; and to Him shall be the obedience of the people.
Matt 1:2 Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers.
The seed of Jacob

In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely; now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Rom 1:3 concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh,
A prophet like Moses
Deut 18:15-19 "The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear... `I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. `And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.
Jn 6:14 Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, "This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world."

Resurrected from the dead
Ps 16:10 For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.
Acts 13:35-37 "Therefore He also says in another Psalm: `You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.' "For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption; "but He whom God raised up saw no corruption.
Betrayed by a friend

A priest like Melchizedek
Ps 110:4 The LORD has sworn and will not relent, "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek."
Heb 5:5-6 So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: "You are My Son, today I have begotten You." As He also says in another place: "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek"
Seated at the right hand of God
Ps 110:1 The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool."

Matt 21:42-43 Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: `The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. Minister in Galilee
Is 9:1-2 Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed, as when at first He lightly esteemed the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterwards more heavily oppressed her, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, in Galilee of the Gentiles. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined.
Matt 4:13 And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali,

Will establish a New Covenant
Jer 31:31-33 "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah-- "not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD. Lk 2:4-6 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered.
Will enter the Temple with authority

SECTION 2 - Prophetic Transition from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant
THE ROLE OF THE OLD TESTAMENT PROPHETS
-
The Old Testament prophet as the voice of God
To understand the role of the prophets in the Old Testament (OT) one must begin with the origin of the word “prophet”. This word stems from the Greek “propheme” which literally means “to speak”. God called the Old Testament prophets to speak of Him and heed warnings upon His people if they strayed. In effect, they served as His messengers who spoke in His Name.
Simply put, the prophets acted as God’s guiding and rebuking voice to His peoples.
In most cases, the children of Israel were led or guided by the prophets. God communicated with these people through Old Testament prophets such as Moses, Elijah, Isaiah, and Jeremiah.
Remember, the Holy Spirit never indwelled the Old Testament saints. Neither did they have access to the written Word of God. They needed to rely on God's Prophets to hear His Word and get His guidance.
In the Old Testament, it is all about the land and the people. When the people obeyed and were diligent in their acknowledgement of God they were blessed and would be brought into the land. When they were rebellious in sin and complacent they were taken out of the land. Throughout these experiences of Israel as a nation, the OT prophets continually warned of the future in conjunction with declaring what needed to be done in the present day to stay under God’s blessings.
-
The greatest role of the Old Testament prophets
The greatest role of the Old Testament prophets, however, was to announce the advent of the Messiah, Jesus Christ who was to be born from among the Jews.
Every act of guiding, warning, admonishing and encouraging the people of God had this major event in mind. All the information contained in Section 6 – “Christ revealed in the Old Testament” of this series of Teachings, bears evidence to this – there will come a time that the Saviour of the world will be born and He will be called “Emmanuel – God with us”.
The Old Testament Prophets told us of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, and they revealed His identity as the Messiah. The prophecies of the Old Testament Scriptures were fulfilled with the Coming of Jesus Christ as the Anointed One of God.

Two significant prophecies by Malachi
The dispensation of the Law was drawing to an end and is phased out with two very significant prophecies uttered by Malachi
Mal 3:1 "Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me.
Mal 3:3 "He will sit as a smelter and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, so that they may present to the LORD offerings in righteousness.
Mal 4:5 "Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the LORD.
Mal 4:6 "He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse."
Malachi was Jehovah's last inspired messenger of the Old Testament (or shall I say “the last one recorded in the Books of the Old Testament”), announcing the advent of the great Messenger of the New Testament; the transition link between the two dispensations. He was certainly not the last prophet operating under the Old Covenant.
Malachi directed his message of judgement to a people plagued with corrupt priests, wicked practices, and a false sense of security in their privileged relationship with God in an endeavour to mould the national life of the people into Jewish form, by re-establishing the holy law and the city of Jerusalem.
Ezra and Nehemiah also played key roles together with Malachi in the restoration process of the Jews. Ezra the priest purified the nation from within of pagan elements and restored the law; Nehemiah did the outer work of rebuilding the city and restoring the national polity, while Malachi had the task of exposing and rectifying the wrongdoings of the nation.
For four hundred years after Malachi’s harsh prophecies, God remained silent, while the two abovementioned prophecies uttered by Malachi challenged the future of the world.
God broke the silence and again communicated to His people through a prophet’s voice with the coming of John the Baptist – the very last Old Testament prophet.
Bear in mind the following:
The Old Testament (Old Covenant) does not start with Genesis 1:1 and the New Testament (New Covenant) not with the Book of Matthew. The fact that we call the first 39 Books of the Bible the Old Testament and the last 27 Books the New Testament is sometimes confusing.
The Old Testament (or Old Covenant) started when God cut a covenant with Abraham. This covenant was inaugurated with the shedding of blood (Genesis 15) – the dividing of animals.
This cut covenant was first implemented by Moses also with the shedding of blood – the Passover lamb and all the other blood sacrifices on a regular basis and is called the Old Covenant or Old Testament.
The final (once and for all) implementation and confirmation of the covenant that God cut with Abraham was done by Jesus Christ also by the shedding of blood – His own blood. This is called the New Covenant or New Testament. So the New Testament only started when Jesus shed His blood.
From the above, we gather that Jesus was born in a time where the Old Testament was still in force. It is of the utmost importance to note that from the time when Jesus’ earthly ministry started until the time of His death He was operating under the Law – the Old Covenant.
Gal 4:4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law,
Gal 4:5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
The above will give us a greater understanding of the prophecies quoted below which speak of John the Baptist – who was also born under the Law
Mal 3:1 "Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me.

Fulfilment of Malachi 3:1:
Mal 3:1 "Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me.
Also prophesied in Isaiah 40:3

Mar 1:3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'make ready the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.'"
Mar 1:4 John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Confirmed by Matthew
Mat 3:1 Now in those days John the Baptist *came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,
Mat 3:2 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
Mat 3:3 For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet when he said, "the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'make ready the way of the Lord, make his paths straight!'"

Luk 3:3 And he came into all the district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins;
Luk 3:4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'make ready the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
Luk 3:5 'every ravine will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be brought low; the crooked will become straight, and the rough roads smooth;
Luk 3:6 and all flesh will see the salvation of God.’”
By John himself
Joh 1:19 This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
Joh 1:23 He said, "I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'make straight the way of the Lord,' as Isaiah the prophet said."
Confirmed by Christ:
Mat 11:7 As these men were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John,
Mat 11:10 "This is the one about whom it is written, 'Behold, I send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'

Fulfilment of Malachi 4:5-6
Mal 4:5 "Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the LORD.
Mal 4:6 "He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse."
Confirmation that John the Baptist came in the spirit and power of Elijah:
Confirmed in Luke:
Luk 1:5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zacharias, ... he had a wife ...and her name was Elizabeth.
Luk 1:6 They were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord.
Luk 1:7 But they had no child because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years.
Luk 1:8 Now it happened that while he was performing his priestly service before God in the appointed order of his division,
Luk 1:11 And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense.
Luk 1:12 Zacharias was troubled when he saw the angel, and fear gripped him.
Luk 1:13 But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will give him the name John.
Luk 1:14 "You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.
Luk 1:15 "For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother's womb.
Luk 1:16 "And he will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God.
Luk 1:17 " It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, TO TURN THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS BACK TO THE CHILDREN, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
Confirmed by Christ:
Mat 11:7 As these men were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
Mat 11:12 "From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it by force.
Mat 11:13 "For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John.
Mat 11:14 "And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is Elijah who was to come.
Mat 17:10 And His disciples asked Him, "Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"
Mat 17:11 And He answered and said, "Elijah is coming and will restore all things;
Mat 17:12 but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they wished. So also the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands."
Mat 17:13 Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist.
Confirmation that John the Baptist is a prophet:
By Zacharias, his father:
Luk 1:57 Now the time had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son.
Luk 1:59 And it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to call him Zacharias, after his father.
Luk 1:60 But his mother answered and said, "No indeed; but he shall be called John."
Luk 1:67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:
Luk 1:68 "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people,
Luk 1:69 And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of David His servant--
Luk 1:76 "And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; For you will go on BEFORE THE LORD TO PREPARE HIS WAYS;
Luk 1:77 To give to His people the knowledge of salvation By the forgiveness of their sins,
By Christ Himself:
Mat 11:7 As these men were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
Mat 11:8 "But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings' palaces!
Mat 11:9 "But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet.
Mat 11:10 "This is the one about whom it is written, 'BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.'
Mat 11:11 " Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
Mat 11:13 "For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John.
-
All the prophets and the Law prophesied until John.
The greatest role of the Old Testament prophets, however, was to announce the advent of the Messiah, Jesus Christ who was to be born from among the Jews.
Every act of guiding, warning, admonishing and encouraging the people of God had this major event in mind. This was also the main task of John the Baptist – his fiery preaching was only secondary – and with great boldness he declares:
Joh 1:26 John answered them saying, "I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.
Joh 1:27 "It is He who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie."
Joh 1:28 These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
Joh 1:29 The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
Joh 1:30 "This is He on behalf of whom I said, 'After me, comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.'
Joh 1:31 "I did not recognize Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing in water."
Joh 1:32 John testified saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.
Joh 1:33 "I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, 'He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.'
Joh 1:34 "I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God.
Joh 1:35 Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples,
Joh 1:36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"
Now Christ uttered these remarkable words:
First of all, Christ confirmed that John is a prophet. Then He went on to say something very profound: “among those born of women, there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he”.
Why would Christ call John “the greatest born of women”?
Most of the prophets before John spoke of the coming Messiah – somewhere in the distant future, but John the Baptist saw the Messiah, touched Him, baptized Him and announced to the whole world: the One that all my predecessors prophesied so faithfully about has made His appearance in bodily form to take away the sins of the world.
This makes him the greatest prophet of them all.
Why would Christ say: “ Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he”?
John had this wonderful privilege of recognizing the Messiah and to introduce Him to the world, but we as blood bought children of God have the unexplainable privilege of being indwelled by Christ through the Holy Spirit. John only saw Him, spoke to Him and touched Him, but He lives inside of me and I am engrafted in Him. That makes the least in the kingdom of heaven greater than John.
A few Scriptures to confirm that Christ is in us and that we are in Him
Joh 14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.
Col 1:26 that is, the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His saints,
Col 1:27 to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Eph 2:4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
Eph 2:5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
Eph 2:6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
Eph 2:7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
I will elaborate on the above extensively in the “Third Dispensation Teachings”
-
The coming of John the Baptist signified the end of the OT order
The coming of John the Baptist also signified the end of the Old Testament order of the prophetic and the inauguration of a totally new era of the prophetic:
First a short summary of the life and ministry of John the Baptist:
John spent his early years in the mountainous tract of Judah lying between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea. When he came forth into public life, great multitudes from “every quarter” were attracted to him. The sum of his preaching was the necessity of repentance. His doctrine and manner of life influenced the entire south of Palestine, and the people from all parts flocked to the place where he was, on the banks of the Jordan. There he baptized thousands unto repentance.
The fame of John reached the ears of Jesus in Nazareth and he came from Galilee to Jordan to be baptized of John, on the special ground that it became him to “fulfil all righteousness” John's special office ceased with the baptism of Jesus, who must now “increase as the King come to his kingdom” and whom He also announced as the Messiah, the Lamb of God who will take away the sins of the world.
His public ministry was suddenly brought to a close by his being cast into prison by Herod, whom he had reproved for the sin of having taken to himself the wife of his brother Philip. He was shut up in the castle of Machaerus (q.v.), a fortress on the southern extremity of Peraea, 9 miles east of the Dead Sea, and here he was beheaded.
The fact that John was beheaded is very significant: it signifies the end of the Old Testament prophetic – God will never again speak to the world in the manner He used to speak to His people under the Old Covenant.
The prophetic of the Old Testament is forever silenced.
From now on God will speak through His Son, Jesus Christ – the Living Word (Logos)
Heb 1:1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,
Heb 1:2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;
Heb 1:3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Heb 1:4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. (NKJV)
Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2 He was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
Joh 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth
The full circle is now completed: the Word (Logos) Who was from the beginning is now with us again and God is not operating anymore through the Law and Prophets.
God now speaks through His Son and through Jesus Christ, new and fresh prophetic activities are inaugurated under the New Covenant.

Jesus came to fulfil the Law and the Prophets
The Law has served its purpose
Joh 1:17 For the law was given through Moses, but (THE)grace and (THE)truth came through Jesus Christ.
Grace, in the Person of Jesus Christ, now replaces the law, because the law was completely fulfilled by Christ!
Mat 5:17 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfil. (NASB)
Mat 5:17 Do not think that I have come to do away with or undo the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to do away with or undo but to complete and fulfil them. (AMP)
Meaning of the word “fulfil”:
With regard to the “Law”:
To thoroughly accomplish
To bring to an end by completing it
To perform fully
To reach its goal
With regard to the “Prophets”:
To accomplish or perform that which was foretold or prefigured in the Old Testament by the prophets
To prove fully
To confirm with the fullest evidence
Quotation from “The Complete Word Study New Testament” by Spiros Zodhiates, Page 948:
“When Jesus said that He came not to destroy the law or the prophets, but to fulfil, meaning that He came not only to fulfil the types and prophecies by His actions and sufferings but also to perform perfect obedience to the law of God in His own Person and to enforce and explain it fully by His doctrine. Thus He has fully satisfied the requirements of the law.”
(With regard to the aforementioned I would refer you to my Teaching on “Grace” where this topic is covered extensively)
* Reader - The topic of the Prophetic will also be covered in detail under the Third Dispensation Teachings
Now let’s move forward to the Third Dispensation Teachings and allow me to take you on an exciting life-changing journey where you will discover the fullness of God’s love manifested in and through Jesus Christ.
Resultant from this finished work of Christ is the profound and awesome fullness of the Holy Spirit.
