I AM THAT I AM

Different names of God and their meanings and how the name “Jehovah” culminated into the seven “I AM” statements of Jesus in the Gospel according to John

SECTION 1 – Different names of God and their meanings

Each of the many names of God describes a different aspect of His many-faceted character and essence. Here are some of the better-known names of God in the Bible:

1) EL, ELOAH:

God "mighty, strong, prominent" (Genesis 17:1; Isaiah 9:6) –

Gen 17:1 Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless.

Isa 9:6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us, And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

2) ELOHIM: (plural form of Eloah):

God “Creator, Mighty and Strong” (Genesis 17:7Jeremiah 31:33)

From the Bible’s first sentence, the superlative nature of God’s power is evident as God (Elohim) speaks the world into existence (Genesis 1:1).

Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

“Elohim” is the Originator of all things and in Him, all things consist.

Gen 17:7 "I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you.

Jer 31:33 "But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the LORD, "I will put My law within them and on their heart, I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

Elaboration on “Elohim” and “Jehovah” (a more in depth explanation of the Name “JEHOVAH” will be given later on

While Elohim exhibits God displayed in his power as the Creator and Governor of the physical universe, the name Jehovah designates His nature as he stands in relation to man, as the only Almighty, true, personal, holy Being, who revealed himself to his people, made a covenant with them, and tangibly implemented and executed that covenant.

Throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, two chief names are used for the one true divine Being -- Elohim, commonly translatedGod” and Jehovah, translated “LORD”. Elohim is the plural of Eloah, it is often used in the short form, El, (a word signifying strength, as in El-Shaddai, God Almighty, the name by which God was especially known to the patriarchs. Genesis 17:1; Genesis 28:3; Exodus 6:3.

The primary idea of “Elohim” is that of “strength” and “power of effect”, and this word properly describes God in that character in which He is exhibited to all men in His works, as the Creator, Sustainer and Supreme Governor of the world.

Elohim: The Eternal, the Almighty, who is Himself without beginning, and has within Himself the power of causing other things, personal and impersonal, to be.

Elohim commonly designates the one true God (Genesis 1:1) and is often paired with God's unique name Jehovah (Genesis 2:4; Psalm 100:3).

When Elohim is used to designate God, it conveys in the Bible that God is:

The Creator (Gen_5:1); Gen 5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.

The King (Psalm 47:7 [8]); Psa 47:7 For God is the King of all the earth;

The Judge (Psalm 50:6); Psa 50:6 And the heavens declare His righteousness, For God Himself is judge.

The Lord (Psalm 86:12); Psa 86:12 I will give thanks to You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, And will glorify Your name forever.

And the Saviour (Hosea 13:4); Hos 13:4 Yet I have been the LORD your God Since the land of Egypt; And you were not to know any god except Me, For there is no saviour besides Me.

Elohim’s character is:

Compassionate (Deuteronomy 4:31); Deu 4:31 "For the LORD your God is a compassionate God; He will not fail you nor destroy you nor forget the covenant with your fathers which He swore to them.

Gracious (Psalm 116:5); Psa 116:5 Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; Yes, our God is compassionate.

And faithful to His covenant (Deuteronomy 7:9). Deu 7:9 "Know therefore that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments;

Elohim indicates God’s power and pre-eminence, and Jehovah His immutable, eternal and self-sustained existence.

Although the form of the word “Elohim” is plural (the plural form of “Eloah”), it is frequently used as if it were singular-that is, with a singular verb (Genesis 1:1-31; Exodus 2:24).

This plural form has given rise to much discussion and I list hereunder a few explanations it might indicate:

plural of majesty,

fullness of divine strength,

the sum of the powers displayed by God.

- Intensity to indicate God's fullness of power;

- majesty to indicate God's kingly rule;

- an allusion to the Trinity (Genesis 1:26).

- that He combines in Himself all the fullness of divine perfections in their manifold powers and operations.

“Eloha” = the noun means the Everlasting, and in the plural (Elohim) the Eternal Powers.

It is characteristic of Hebrew that extension, magnitude and dignity, as well as actual multiplicity, is expressed by the plural.

Jehovah: the Personal God in covenant with His people, manifesting boundless mercy, righteousness, and faithfulness to His word

Jehovah is in the Old Testament the God of redemption.

Elohim is God in nature, Jehovah God in grace (Exodus 34:6-7).

Elohim is the God of providence; Jehovah is the God of promise and prophecy; hence, the prophets' formula is, "thus says Jehovah," not Elohim.

Elohim can do all that He wills; Jehovah will do all that He has promised.

3) EL SHADDAI:

God Almighty,” speaks of God’s ultimate power over all – the power that breaks any form of resistance.

The God who is manifested by the terribleness of His mighty acts - “The Storm God”

God is so overpowering that He is considered “Allmighty”

Gen 17:1 Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD (Jehovah) appeared to Abram and said to him, " I am God Almighty (El Shaddai); Walk before Me, and be blameless.

Gen 17:2 "I will establish My covenant between Me and you, And I will multiply you exceedingly."

EL SHADDAI also means: “the All Sufficient One”, “the One Who is sufficient” or “the breastfeeding God”

Jehovah is, sufficient in and of himself, and for himself, and stands in no need of any, or of anything from another; and has a sufficiency for others, both in a way of providence and grace.

“Shad” means “breasts” in Hebrew. Genesis 49:25 indicates that “shaddai” might be related to the word for breasts (shadaim), indicating sufficiency and nourishments.

This shows God’s complete sufficiency to nurture the fledgeling nation into fruitfulness.

Indeed God first used this Name when He refers to multiplying Abraham’s offspring (Gen 17:2)

Jesus said “I am the Bread of Life”

Joh 6:35 And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes on Me shall never thirst.

Joh 6:48 I am the Bread of life.

Out of Jesus as the Bread of Life, flow all the spiritual nutrients that we require to live a Godly fruitful life.

That is also why He is called, “El Shaddai” – the “All Sufficient One”, or rather the “Breastfeeding God”.

Every nutrient that a newborn baby might require is already contained within the mother. Similarly, everything that I need for my life is contained within God and is conveyed to me through Christ Jesus by the Holy Spirit.

4) EL ELYON:

“Most High" (Genesis 14:18-20) – derived from the Hebrew root for “go up” or “ascend,” so the implication is of that which is the very highest.

Gen 14:18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High.

Gen 14:19 He blessed him and said, "Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth;

Gen 14:20 And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand." He gave him a tenth of all.

El Elyon denotes exaltation and speaks of the absolute right to lordship.

God is the “Exalted One,” who is lifted far above all gods and men.

5) EL ROI:

"God of Seeing" ( Genesis 16:13) – the name ascribed to God by Hagar, alone and desperate in the wilderness after being driven out by Sarah (Genesis 16:1-14). When Hagar met the Angel of the Lord, she realized she had seen God Himself in a theophany. She also realized that El Roi saw her in her distress and testified that He is a God who lives and sees all.

6) EL-OLAM:

"Everlasting God" ( Psalm 90:1-3)

Psa 90:1 A Prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.

Psa 90:2 Before the mountains were born Or You gave birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

God’s nature is without beginning or end, free from all constraints of time, and He contains within Himself the very cause of time itself. “From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”

7) EL-GIBHOR:

“Mighty God” brave, strong, mighty (Isaiah 10:21; Jeremiah 32:17,18)

The Israelites thought of their God as fighting for them, and easily then this title was applied to God as the Mighty Man of war,

Isa 10:21 A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God.

Jer 32:17 Ah, Lord Jehovah! You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and Your outstretched arm; not anything is too difficult for You,

Jer 32:18 who acts with loving-kindness to thousands, and repays the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their sons after them. The great, the mighty God, Jehovah of Hosts, is His name.

EL-GIBHOR is also the name describing the Messiah, Christ Jesus, in (Isaiah 9:6):

Isa 9:6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

As a powerful and mighty warrior, the Messiah, the Mighty God, will accomplish the destruction of God’s enemies and rule with a rod of iron ( Revelation 19:15).

Rev 19:15 From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty.

8) ADONAY:

Adonay Jehovah: signifying that God is the Lord of Lords

Adonay from the word Adon: "lord; master; Lord."

Adon” means "lord" or "master" and is distinguished from the Hebrew word “ba`al”, which signifies "possessor" or "owner."

“Adon” basically describes the one who occupies the position of a "master" or "lord" over a slave or servant:

When applied to God, “adon” is used in several senses. It signifies His position as the one who has authority (like a master) over His people. In such contexts, God is conceived as a Being who is a sovereign ruler and almighty master.

In the form “adonay” the word means "Lord" par excellence or "Lord over all," even as it sometimes does in the form “adon” as in Deuteronomy 10:17, where God is called the "God of gods, and Lord of lords"; and in Joshua 3:11, where He is called the "Lord of all the earth").

Deu 10:17 "For the LORD your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe.

Jos 3:11 "Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is crossing over ahead of you into the Jordan.

“Adonay” as a name of Deity, emphasizes His sovereignty (Psalm 2:4; Isaiah 7:7), and corresponds closely to Kúrios of the New Testament. It is frequently combined with Jehovah (Genesis 15:8; Isaiah 7:7, etc.) and with Elohim (Psalm 86:12).

SECTION 2 – Key moments of God with specific people

The Bible records profound moments where God interacted with specific people in unique ways - very significant are the different Names through which He interacted with these people.

1) ADAM & EVE

In creating man (the spirit man) God interacted as “Elohim”. (God never revealed His Name to Adam and Eve)

“Elohim” means God “Creator, Mighty and Strong”– the plural form of Eloah.

“Eloha” = the noun means the Everlasting, and in the plural (Elohim) the Eternal Powers.

Gen 1:26 Then God (Elohim) said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."

Gen 1:27 God (Elohim) created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Gen 1:28 God (Elohim) blessed them; and God (Elohim) said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth."

First use of the combination “Jehovah Elohim”

Jehovah: the Self-Existing One; the Personal God in covenant with His people, manifesting boundless mercy, righteousness, and faithfulness to His word

Jehovah: God performing what he had promised, and finishing his own work

Jehovah Elohim: Elohim can do all that He wills; Jehovah will do all that He has promised.

Gen 2:4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God (Jehovah Elohim) made earth and heaven.

God’s further dealings with the earthly man are done in the capacity of “Jehovah Elohim”

Gen 2:7 Then the LORD God (Jehovah Elohim) formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

Gen 2:8 The LORD God (Jehovah Elohim) planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed.

Gen 2:15 Then the LORD God (Jehovah Elohim) took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.

Gen 2:16 The LORD God (Jehovah Elohim) commanded the man, saying, "From any tree of the garden you may eat freely;

Gen 2:17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die."

Gen 2:21 So the LORD God (Jehovah Elohim) caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place.

Gen 2:22 The LORD God (Jehovah Elohim) fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.

Gen 3:8 They heard the sound of the LORD God (Jehovah Elohim) walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God (Jehovah Elohim) among the trees of the garden.

Gen 3:9 Then the LORD God (Jehovah Elohim) called to the man, and said to him, "Where are you?"

Gen 3:21 The LORD God (Jehovah Elohim) made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

2) NOAH

God dealt with Noah in the capacity of “Jehovah” as well as “Elohim”. (God neither revealed His Name to Noah)

Gen 6:8 But Noah found favour in the eyes of the LORD (Jehovah).

Gen 6:13 Then God (Elohim) said to Noah, "The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.

Gen 6:14 "Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood;

Gen 7:1 Then the LORD (Jehovah) said to Noah, "Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this time

3) ABRAHAM

God interacted with Abraham in the capacity of “Jehovah”, “Adonay Jehovah”, “El Shaddai” and “Elohim”.

Abraham was the first person to whom God revealed His Name. (Recorded in Gen 17:1)

Gen 12:1 Now the LORD (Jehovah) said to Abram, "Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father's house To the land which I will show you;

Gen 12:2 And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing;

Gen 12:3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you, all the families of the earth will be blessed."

Gen 12:4 So Abram went forth as the LORD (Jehovah) had spoken to him;

Gen 13:4 to the place of the altar which he had made there formerly; and there Abram called on the name of the LORD (Jehovah).

Gen 13:14 The LORD (Jehovah) said to Abram after Lot had separated from him, "Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward;

Gen 13:15 for all the land which you see, I will give it to you and to your descendants forever.

Gen 13:16 "I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your descendants can also be numbered.

Gen 15:1 After these things the word of the LORD (Jehovah) came to Abram in a vision, saying, " Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your rewardshall be very great."

Gen 15:2 Abram said, "O Lord GOD (Adonay Jehovah), what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?"

Adonay Jehovah: signifying that God is the Lord of Lords

Gen 15:6 Then he believed in the LORD (Jehovah), and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.

Gen 15:7 And He said to him, "I am the LORD (Jehovah) who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess it."

Gen 15:8 He said, "O Lord GOD (Adonay Jehovah)how may I know that I will possess it?"

Gen 15:18 On that day the LORD (Jehovah); made a covenant with Abram, saying,

In Gen 17 God is revealing His Name to Abraham: “I am God Almighty (El Shaddai)”

Gen 17:4 "As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, And you will be the father of a multitude of nations.

Gen 17:5 "No longer shall your name be called Abram, But your name shall be Abraham; For I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.

Gen 17:6 "I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings will come forth from you.

Gen 17:7 "I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenantto be God (Elohim) to you and to your descendants after you.

Gen 17:9 God (Elohim) said further to Abraham, "Now as for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.

Gen 18:1 Now the LORD (Jehovah) appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, while he was sitting at the tent door in the heat of the day.

Gen 18:13 And the LORD (Jehovah) said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh, saying, 'Shall I indeed bear a child, when I am so old?'

Gen 18:14 "Is anything too difficult for the LORD (Jehovah)? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son."

Gen 18:17 The LORD (Jehovah) said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do,

Gen 18:18 since Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and in him, all the nations of the earth will be blessed?

Gen 18:19 "For I have chosen him, so that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of theLORD (Jehovah) by doing righteousness and justice, so that the LORD (Jehovah) may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken about him."

Jehovah is discussing the destiny of Sodom and Gomorrah with Abraham

Gen 18:20 And the LORD (Jehovah) said, "The outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is indeed great, and their sin is exceedingly grave.

Gen 18:26 So the LORD (Jehovah) said, "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place on their account."

Gen 21:1 Then the LORD (Jehovah) took note of Sarah as He had said, and the LORD (Jehovah) did for Sarah as He had promised.

Gen 21:2 So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time of which God (Elohim) had spoken to him.

Gen 22:1 Now it came about after these things, that God (Elohim) tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."

Gen 22:2 He said, "Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you."

Gen 22:10 Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

Gen 22:11 But the angel of the LORD (Jehovah) called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" And he said, " Here I am."

Gen 22:12 He said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God (Elohim) , since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me."

Abraham had an awesome experience of God’s Name: “Jehovah-Jireh” – “LORD – my Provider” when he was tested by God to sacrifice his son Isaac

Gen 22:13 Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son.

Gen 22:14 Abraham called the name of that place The LORD (Jehovah) Will Provide (Jehovah-Jireh) (Jehovah Will See), as it is said to this day, "In the mount of the LORD (Jehovah) it will be provided." (Jehovah does provide) (In the mount of Jehovah it will be seen) (In the mountain the Lord is seen) (Jehovah shall see to it)

Gen 22:15 Then the angel of the LORD (Jehovah) called to Abraham a second time from heaven,

Gen 22:16 and said, "By Myself, I have sworn, declares the LORD (Jehovah), because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son,

Gen 22:17 indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore, and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies.

Gen 22:18 "In your seed, all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice."

4) MOSES

God cut a Covenant with Abraham and He is now ready to implement this Covenant.

For this purpose God called Moses to deliver the Israelites from Egypt – the first phase of the implementation of the covenant:

When Moses received his commission to be the deliverer of Israel, the Almighty, who appeared in the burning bush, communicated to him, the name which he should give as the credentials of his mission: "And God said unto Moses, "I AM THAT I AM (ehyea asher ehyeh); and he said, 'Thus you shall say unto the children of Israel, I AM has sent me unto you.'

The first thing that God did was to reveal His Name to Moses:

Exo 2:23 Now it came about in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out, and their cry for help because of their bondage rose up to God (Elohim).

Exo 2:24 So God (Elohim) heard their groaning; and God (Elohim) remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Exo 2:25 God (Elohim) saw the sons of Israel, and God (Elohim) took notice of them.

Exo 3:1 Now Moses was pasturing the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God (Elohim).

Exo 3:2 The angel of the LORD (Jehovah) appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush, and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed.

Exo 3:3 So Moses said, "I must turn aside now and see this marvellous sight, why the bush is not burned up."

Exo 3:4 When the LORD (Jehovah) saw that he turned aside to look, God (Elohim) called to him from the midst of the bush and said, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am."

Exo 3:5 Then He said, "Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground."

God first spoke to Moses in the capacity of “Elohim”

Exo 3:6 He said also, "I am the God (Elohim) of your father, the God of Abraham, the God (Elohim) of Isaac, and the God (Elohim) of Jacob." Then Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God (Elohim).

Exo 3:7 The LORD (Jehovah) said, "I have surely seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt and have given heed to their cry because of their taskmasters, for I am aware of their sufferings.

Exo 3:8 "So I have come down to deliver them from the power of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey,

Exo 3:10 "Therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you may bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt."

Moses asked God this critical question: “What is Your Name?”

Exo 3:13 Then Moses said to God (Elohim), "Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, 'The God (Elohim) of your fathers has sent me to you.' Now they may say to me, 'What is His name?' What shall I say to them?"

Whereas God revealed Himself to Abraham in the Name – God Almighty (El Shaddai), He reveals Himself to Moses in the Name: “I AM WHO I AM”

Exo 3:14 God (Elohim) said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM"; and He said, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'"

Now God is clearly telling Moses His proper Name – the meaning of “I AM WHO I AM” – “JEHOVAH”

Exo 3:15 God (Elohim), furthermore, said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'The LORD (JEHOVAH), the God (Elohim) of your fathers, the God (Elohim) of Abraham, theGod (Elohim) of Isaac, and the God (Elohim) of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations.

Exo 3:16 "Go and gather the elders of Israel together and say to them, 'The LORD (JEHOVAH), theGod (Elohim) of your fathers, the God (Elohim) of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, " I am indeed concerned about you and what has been done to you in Egypt.

“I AM WHO I AM” – “JEHOVAH” – the God who keeps His Covenant and executes it

God again confirms His Name to Moses and what He as “JEHOVAH” is about to do

Exo 6:2 God spoke further to Moses and said to him, "I am the LORD (JEHOVAH);

Exo 6:2 And God said to Moses, I am Yahweh: (BBE)

Exo 6:2 And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am JEHOVAH: (RV)

Exo 6:3 and I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as God Almighty (El Shaddai), but by My nameLORD (JEHOVAH), I did not make Myself known to them.

Exo 6:3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Almighty [El-Shaddai], but by My name the Lord [Yahweh--the redemptive name of God] I did not make Myself known to them [in acts and great miracles]. (AMP)

Exo 6:4 "I also established My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they sojourned.

Exo 6:6 "Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, 'I am the LORD (JEHOVAH), and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.

Exo 6:7 'Then I will take you for My people, and I will be your God (Elohim), and you shall know that I am the LORD (JEHOVAH) your God (Elohim),

I am the Lord ... ( Exodus 6:6) - meaning this: “I am Jehovah (Yahweh, the LORD), and I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as El Shaddai, but as to my name Jehovah, I was not made known to them.” In other words, the full import of that name was not disclosed to them

"To be made known" (Exodus 6:3) means to be manifested in an act, making good in fact all that was implied in the name (Ezekiel 20:9)

Eze 20:9 "But I acted for the sake of My name, that it should not be profaned

God would now be known by his name Jehovah, that is, a God performing what he had promised, and finishing his own work.

When God gave the promises to the patriarchs He was known as GOD, Almighty (El-Shaddai) – able to fulfil them (Genesis17:1);

Gen 17:1 Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless.

Gen 17:2 "I will establish My covenant between Me and you, And I will multiply you exceedingly."

To Moses He was known as Jehovah – the unchangeably faithful One (Malachi 3:6) in keeping all the promises made to the patriarchs;

Mal 3:6 For I, Jehovah, change not (LITV). This Scripture ties up with Hebrews 13:8, which identifies Jesus with Jehovah.

Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

SECTION 3 – Meaning of the name “I AM WHO I AM” – “Jehovah”

“I AM WHO I AM” – “I WILL BE THAT I WILL BE”

The unchanging, eternal, self-existent God,” the “I am that I am,” a covenant-keeping God

A name that denotes what He is in Himself, I AM THAT I AM.

This signifies the real being of God, His self-existence, and that He is the Being of beings;

It also denotes His eternity and immutability, and His constancy and faithfulness in fulfilling His promises, for it includes all time, past, present, and future; and the sense is, not only I am what I am at present, but I am what I have been, and I am what I shall be, and shall be what I am.

The Immutability of God is an attribute where “God is unchanging in his character, will, and covenant promises."

Jehovah. (I am; the eternal living one).

The Name of the Supreme Being, usually interpreted as signifying self-derived and permanent existence

The name Jehovah designates God’s nature as he stands in relation to man as his Redeemer.

God's name is a reflection of His being. God is the only self-existent/self-sufficient Being in the universe. Only God has life in and of Himself. That is the essential meaning of I AM THAT I AM - JEHOVAH

This explains his name JEHOVAH, and signifies:

1. That He is self-existent: He has His being of Himself.

2. That He is eternal and unchangeable, and always the same, yesterday, to-day, and forever.

3. That He is incomprehensible; we cannot by searching find Him out

4. That He is faithful and true to all his promises, unchangeable in His word as well as in His nature

While the name Elohim exhibits God displayed in his power as the Creator and Governor of the physical universe, the name Jehovah designates His nature as He stands in relation to man, as the only Almighty, true, personal, holy Being, who revealed Himself to his people, made a covenant with them, and tangibly implemented and executed that covenant.

Jehovah: the Personal God in covenant with His people, manifesting boundless mercy, righteousness, and faithfulness to His word

Jehovah is in the Old Testament the God of redemption.

Elohim reflects God in nature, creation and material things, while Jehovah reflects God in grace (Exodus 34:6-7).

Elohim is the God of providence; Jehovah is the God of promise and prophecy – therefore, the prophets' way of speaking is, "thus says Jehovah," and not “thus says Elohim”

JEHOVAH (YHWH / YAHWEH): “LORD” – is, strictly speaking, the only proper name for God - Translated in English Bibles as “LORD” (all capitals) to distinguish it from Adonai, “Lord.”

This name specifies immediacy, a presence. Jehovah is present, accessible, near to those who call on Him for deliverance (Psalm 107:13), forgiveness (Psalm 25:11) and guidance (Psalm 31:3).

Psa 107:13 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses.

Psa 25:11 For Your name's sake, O LORD, Pardon my iniquity, for it is great.

Psa 31:3 For You are my rock and my fortress; For Your name's sake You will lead me and guide me.

The frequent appearance of the name, Jehovah in relation to God's redemptive work underscores its tremendous importance (Leviticus 26:45; Psalm 19:14 )

Lev 26:45 Then I shall remember for them the covenant of the first fathers, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God; I am Jehovah. (LITV)

Psa 19:14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing before You, O Jehovah, my Rock and my Redeemer. (LITV)

Pronunciation:

Jehovah (“YHWH”, “YAHWEH”) as the proper name of the one true God is unpronounced except with the vowel pointing of H136: Adonai = Lord.

“LORD” (capital letters) is a title, spoken in place of Yahweh in Jewish display of reverence.

This custom (of substituting Jehovah with Adonai), which had its origin in reverence, was founded upon an erroneous interpretation of Leviticus 24:16 from which it was inferred that the mere utterance of the name constituted a capital offence

Lev 24:16 'Moreover, the one who blasphemes the name of the LORD shall surely be put to death;

Whenever this name occurred in the sacred books the Jews pronounced it, as they still do, “Adonai” (i.e., Lord),

The following insightful discussion on “YHWH” was taken from the website www.gotquestions.org (with their permission)

Question: "What is YHWH? What is the tetragrammaton?"

Answer: The ancient Hebrew language that the Hebrew Scriptures were written in did not have vowels. In the original Hebrew, God’s name is given as "YHWH." This is known as the Tetragrammaton. Because of the lack of vowels, Bible scholars debate how the Tetragrammaton “YHWH” was pronounced.

Contrary to what some Christians (and at least one cult that uses this name) believe, “Jehovah” is probably not the Divine Name revealed to Israel. Due to the Jewish fear of accidentally taking God’s Name in vain (
Leviticus 24:16 ), they basically quit saying it out-loud altogether. Instead, when reading, they substituted the actual tetragrammaton (which is only the consonants of the Divine Name “YHWH” since Hebrew is not usually written with vowels included) with the word Adonai (Lord). Even in the Septuagint (the Greek version of the Old Testament), the translators substituted Kurios (Lord) for the Divine Name. Eventually, the vowels from Adonai (“Lord”) or Elohim (“God”) found their way into the consonants YHWH, thus forming “YaHWeH.” But this does not mean that was how God’s Name was originally pronounced.

Any number of vowel combinations is possible, and the Jews are as uncertain of the real pronunciation as are Christians. “Jehovah” is actually a much later (probably 16th century) variant in Latin. Here, the “Y” is substituted with a “J” (Hebrew does not even have a “J” sound), and the “W” with a “V,” plus another vowel combination, resulting in “JeHoVaH.” This vowel combination is composed of the abbreviated forms of the imperfect, the participle, and the prefect of the Hebrew being a verb (English “is”) - thus the meaning of Jehovah could be said to be "he who will be, is, and has been."

So, what is God's name and what does it mean? The most likely choice for how the tetragrammaton was pronounced is "Yahweh" or something very similar to that. The name "Yahweh" refers to God's self-existence. "Yahweh" is linked with how God described Himself in
Exodus 3:14, "God said to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM.' This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'" God's name is a reflection of His being. God is the only self-existent/self-sufficient Being in the universe. Only God has life in and of Himself. That is the essential meaning of the tetragrammaton / YHWH / Yahweh. (End of quotation)

“Jehovah (“Yahweh”) as the unchangeable Being is gloriously portrayed in Revelation 1:8
Rev 1:8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."

SECTION 4 – “Jehovah Combinations”

Many times in the Bible the name Jehovah is compounded with another word to describe the character of the Lord in greater detail

The following “Jehovah combinations” in the Old Testament give us a clear understanding of how sincere and practical God is in His dealings with us:

There are over forty of these “Jehovah combinations” in the Bible and knowledge of them will enable you to receive the love and grace of God tangibly in your life.

With each combination, I have also indicated possible parallel Scriptures in the New Testament.

*Reader - NB!! God is to us whatever His name is!

Adonai Jehovah – LORD God

Genesis 15:2

Gen 15:2 And Abram said, Lord Jehovah, what will You give to me since I am going childless and the son of the inheritance of my house is Eleazar of Damascus? (LITV)

A combination of God’s unique name YHWH and the generic “Lord - Adonai,” signifying that He is the Lord of Lords

New Testament:

Rev 19:16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."

Jehovah - Jireh: LORD Who Provides

Genesis 22; 1 John 4:9; Philip 4:19

Genesis 22:12-14

Abraham had an awesome experience of this name of God: “Jehovah-Jireh” – “LORD – my Provider” when he was tested by God to sacrifice his son Isaac

Gen 22:12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

New Testament:

1 John 4:9

1Jn 4:9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.

Philip 4:19

Php 4:19 And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 5:6-7

1Pe 5:6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time,

1Pe 5:7 casting all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.

The Revelation of the Name Jehovah-Jireh as used in Genesis 22:12-14.

The meaning of this name is: “LORD Who Provides”.

The name is literally: “ LORD Who Sees or LORD Who Will See To It”. Jehovah-Jireh means; the Lord Who will see to it that my every need is met. One Who knows my need because He sees. One Who is able to meet my need in just the right time as He did for Abraham, and One Who can meet it fully. For Abraham, it was the ram caught in the thicket that was offered in Isaac's place. For us, it is whatever we need in any given situation.

Jehovah – Rapha; (Jehovah – Rophe): LORD Who Heals

Exodus 15:22-26; Psa 103:2,3; Isaiah 53:4,5

Exodus 15:22-26

Exo 15:22 Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur, and they went three days in the wilderness and found no water.

Exo 15:23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter; therefore it was named Marah.

Exo 15:24 So the people grumbled at Moses, saying, "What shall we drink?"

Exo 15:25 Then he cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a tree, and he threw it into the waters, and the waters became sweet. There He made for them a statute and regulation, and there He tested them.

Exo 15:26 And He said, "If you will give earnest heed to the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, the LORD, am your healer."

For I, LORD, am your healer; both in body and soul; in body, by preserving

from diseases, and by curing them when afflicted with them; and in soul, by

pardoning their iniquities, which, in Scripture, is sometimes signified by healing, see

Psa 103:2,3.

Psa 103:2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits;

Psa 103:3 Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases;

Isaiah 53:4,5

Isa 53:5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging, we are healed.

We are healed literally, “it is healed to us”; or “healing has happened to us”. The healing here referred to, is spiritual healing, or healing from sin. Pardon of sin, and restoration to the favour of God are not infrequently represented as an act of healing. The figure is derived from the fact that awakened and convicted sinners are often represented as crushed, broken, bruised by the weight of their transgressions, and the removal of a load of sin is represented as an act of healing. ‘I said, O Lord, be merciful unto me; heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee’ Psalm 41:4. Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for I am weak; O Lord, heal me, for my bones are vexed’ Psalm 6:2. ‘Who forgives all your, iniquities; who heals all your diseases Psalm 103:3. The idea here is, that the Messiah would be scourged; and that it would be by that scourging that health would be imparted to our souls. (Albert Barnes’ Notes on the Bible – E-Sword)

(Sin is not only a crime for which we were condemned to die, and which Christ purchased for us the pardon of, but it is a disease which tends directly to the death of our souls, and which Christ provided for the cure of. By his stripes, that is, the sufferings he underwent, he purchased for us the Spirit and grace of God, to mortify our corruptions, which are the distempers of our souls; and to put our souls in a good state of health, that they may be fit to serve God, and prepare to enjoy him. And by the doctrine of Christ’s cross, and the powerful arguments it furnishes us with against sin, the dominion of sin is broken in us, anal we are fortified against that which feeds the disease - Henry.)

Mal 4:2 "But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall.

Healing: restoration of health, remedy, cure, deliverance, refreshing

Salvation is God’s rescue of the entire person and healing is His complete repair of that person (body, soul, spirit – spiritual and material). A complete lifelong restoration process as we grow in the knowledge and understanding of the complete work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit is ever changing me into the very image of Christ.

New Testament:

Luke 6:18-19

Luk 6:18 who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were being cured.

Luk 6:19 And all the people were trying to touch Him, for power was coming from Him and healing them all.

1 Peter 2:24

1Pe 2:24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

Jehovah Nissi: LORD Our Banner

( Exodus 17:15), where banner is understood to be a rallying place
Exodus 17:8-15 1 Chronicles 29:11-13

Exodus 17:8-15

Exo 17:9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

Exo 17:10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

Exo 17:13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

Exo 17:15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:

Exo 17:16 For he said Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

The Name Jehovah-Nissi has to do with warfare and commemorates the desert victory over the Amalekites in Exodus 17. In this instance, the warfare involved God's very own. Our Father is willing to wage warfare on our behalf.

The LORD Our Banner desires to give us victory.

New Testament:

Jehovah-Rohi: LORD our Shepherd

Psalm 23

Psa 23:1 A Psalm of David. THE LORD is my Shepherd [to feed, guide, and shield me], I shall not lack. (AMP)

Psa 23:1 A David psalm. GOD, my shepherd! I don't need a thing. (MSG)

After David pondered his relationship as a shepherd to his sheep, he realized that was exactly the relationship God had with him, and so he declares, “Yahweh-Rohi is my Shepherd. I shall not want”

This is perhaps the most familiar chapter in the Old Testament. The Psalm is a short Psalm...only six verses. But it is filled with words that elaborate on the central statement in which this compound name is included: vs. 1, "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." Perhaps it is as the little boy said when he misread it, "The Lord is my shepherd, I don't want anything else."

This is only one of the three Psalms that are the Shepherd Psalms.

Psalm 22 is the Psalm of the Good Shepherd, laying down His life for His sheep. Psalm 24 is the Psalm of the Chief Shepherd, Who is coming again.

And this Psalm 23 is the Psalm of the Great Shepherd Who cares so intensely for His sheep.

New Testament:

John 10:11, 14-15

Joh 10:11 "I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

Joh 10:14 "I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me,

Joh 10:15 even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father, and I lay down My life for the sheep.

Jehovah-Shalom: LORD is Peace

Judges 6:24; Isaiah 9:6 Rom 8:31-35

Judges 6:24

Jdg 6:23 And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.

Jdg 6:24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah shalom: (The LORD is Peace.)

Isaiah 9:6

Isa 9:6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us, And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Peace:

Shalom (H7965), peace; completeness; welfare; health; perfect; be sound.

Shalom with the meaning of "unharmed" and "unhurt" (Gen_26:29) express the root meaning of "to be whole."

Shalom as a harmonious state of the soul and mind encourages the development of the faculties and powers. The state of being at ease is experienced both externally and internally.

Closely associated to the above is the meaning "welfare," specifically personal "welfare" or "health."

Shalom also signifies "peace," indicative of a prosperous relationship between two or more parties.

The following meanings are also attached to “shalom”: peaceable; peaceful; deliverance; preservation; salvation; be in good health; prosperity; well-being in general; all good in relation to both man and God.

New Testament:

John 14:27

Joh 14:27 "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.

Jehovah-Tsidkenu: LORD Our Righteousness
Jeremiah 33:16; Jeremiah 23:5-6; 1 Corinthians 1:30; 2 Corinthians 5:21

Jeremiah 33:16

Jer 33:16 'In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell in safety; and this is the name by which she will be called: the LORD is our righteousness.'

Jeremiah 23:5-6

Jer 23:5 Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will raise to David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and act wisely, and He shall do justice and righteousness in the earth.

Jer 23:6 In His days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely. And this is His name by which He shall be called, Jehovah our Righteousness. (LITV)

In Jeremiah 23:5-6 a “righteous branch” is promised to Israel; One who someday will be king over Israel. His name is to be Jehovah-Tsidkenu or Jehovah our Righteousness.

Jeremiah speaks of the day when a righteous king would return and set up His righteous kingdom and reign and do judgment on the earth.

Tsidkenu is a word that is used in relation to God’s dealing with men. Though difficult to translate, it has to do with such things as justification, righteousness, and acquittal. When coupled with the name “Jehovah,” it means that all He does is ever and only righteous. He is the sole source of all that is righteous and good. This has great implications for us. First, how can I stand before One who is always perfect in all holiness and righteousness?

It is Jehovah-Tsidkenu who covers me with His righteousness that provides a shelter for me in His presence. I stand before Him both innocent and righteous, and this is assured by His death and resurrection, Romans 4:25.

New Testament:

Romans 4:25

Rom 4:25 He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.

As with Jehovah-M’Kaddesh, it is God alone who provides righteousness to man, ultimately in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ, who became sin for us “that we might become the Righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Corinthians 1:30).

2 Corinthians 5:21

2Co 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

1 Corinthians 1:30

1Co 1:30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,

I Samuel 1:3

1Sa 1:3 Now this man would go up from his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh.

Hosts: means “hordes,” both of angels and of men. He is Lord of the host of heaven and of the inhabitants of the earth, of Jews and Gentiles, of rich and poor, master and slave. The name is expressive of the majesty, power, and authority of God and shows that He is able to accomplish what He determines to do.

SECTION 5 – Jesus Christ – The all in one Jehovah

All of what is said of Jehovah in the Old Testament culminates in one person – Jesus Christ our Lord

Who Jesus is, is best described in:

Heb 1:3 He is the sole expression of the glory of God [the Light-being, the out-raying or radiance of the divine], and He is the perfect imprint and very image of [God's] nature, upholding and maintaining and guiding and propelling the universe by His mighty word of power. (AMP)

Other translations of Heb 1:3

This Son perfectly mirrors God”, (MSG)

“Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person”, (NKJV)

“Who being the shining splendour of His glory, and the express image of His essence” (MKJV)

“Who, being the outshining of his glory, the true image of his substance”, (BBE)

The fullness of the Godhead dwells in Jesus Christ and only in Him are we complete

Col 2:8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.

Col 2:9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;

Col 2:10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. (NKJV)

Christ is indeed the covenant-keeping God – Jehovah – who became flesh and dwelt amongst His people and who is now indwelling us through the Holy Spirit

Joh 1:1 In the beginning, was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Joh 1:2 He was in the beginning with God.

Joh 1:3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

Joh 1:4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.

Joh 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Col 1:27 to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Jesus Christ obtained God’s Name through inheritance

Heb 1:2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Sonwhom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.

Heb 1:3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

Heb 1:4 having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

Heb 1:4 [Taking a place and rank by which] He Himself became as much superior to angels as the glorious Name (title) which He has inherited is different from and more excellent than theirs. (AMP)

God gave Jesus a Name above all names

Php 2:8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Php 2:9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,

Php 2:10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

Php 2:11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Only the Holy Spirit can make Jesus LORD (Jehovah) in your life

1Co 12:3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is accursed"; and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

So much life-changing power is released when you call upon the Name of Jesus – the Lord

Joel prophesied it

Joe 2:32 "And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the LORD Will be delivered;

Peter confirmed it on the Day of Pentecost

Act 2:21 'AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.'

Paul states it very clearly

Rom 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;

Rom 10:10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.

Rom 10:11 For the Scripture says, "WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED."

Rom 10:12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him;

Rom 10:13 for "WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED."

Jesus made this profound statement

Joh 14:12 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.

Joh 14:13 "Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

Joh 14:14 "If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.

The profoundness of His Name

His Name expresses the sum of the qualities which mark the nature or character of Jesus as Jehovah. To believe in the name of Jesus Christ the Son of God is to accept as true the revelation contained in that title and implies a spiritual and mystical union with Him.

The name of Jesus is the expression of the sum total of His divine Being. His name is the formula in which all His attributes and characteristics are summed up and is equivalent to His person. His name is never detached from His nature. When you believe in His name you profess to acknowledge and appropriate Jesus in all that He is and in all that He did.

John 20:31 gives confirmation:

Joh 20:31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.

It is absolutely imperative to know that the moment we “ask in that Name”, “declare in that Name”, “speak in that Name”, believe in that Name or “call upon that Name”, the full and complete power vested in the Lord Jesus (Jehovah) is released in my situation!!!

*Reader - Practical application of the aforementioned:

Whenever I speak, ask or declare in the Name of Jesus Christ I act on His behalf and it is as if Jesus Himself declares it – He is only using me by the Holy Spirit as a channel to operate through!

It is the very same situation if I would act on behalf of an earthly king who gave me the authority to speak on his behalf. The moment I act in this delegated authority it would be as if the king himself is speaking.

One example of acting in the Name of Jesus:

Peter and John rose up a lame man

Act 3:1 Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer.

Act 3:2 And a man who had been lame from his mother's womb was being carried along, whom they used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, in order to beg alms of those who were entering the temple.

Act 3:3 When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking to receive alms.

Act 3:4 But Peter, along with John, fixed his gaze on him and said, "Look at us!"

Act 3:5 And he began to give them his attention, expecting to receive something from them.

Act 3:6 But Peter said, "I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene--walk!"

Act 3:7 And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened.

Act 3:8 With a leap he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.

Peter explained to the astonished crowd what had happened

Act 3:11 While he was clinging to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the so-called portico of Solomon, full of amazement.

Act 3:12 But when Peter saw this, he replied to the people, "Men of Israel, why are you amazed at this, or why do you gaze at us, as if by our own power or piety we had made him walk?

Act 3:13 "The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus,

Act 3:16 "And on the basis of faith in His name, it is the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all.

Another example:

Num 6:22 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

Num 6:23 Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, In this way you shall bless the sons of Israel, saying to them:

Num 6:24 Jehovah bless you and keep you;

Num 6:25 Jehovah cause His face to shine on you, and be gracious to you;

Num 6:26 Jehovah lift up His face to you, and give you peace.

Num 6:27 So they shall put My name on the sons of Israel, and I Myself will bless them. (LITV)

Num 6:27 `And they have put My name upon the sons of Israel, and I--I do bless them.'

(YLT)

By blessing somebody or any situation in the Holy Name of Jehovah (LORD Jesus, the Christ, the Son of the living God) you put His Name upon that person or situation and He will bless it. God, Himself will get involved!

SECTION 6 – The seven “I AM” statements in the Book of John

When Moses received his commission to be the deliverer of Israel, the Almighty, who appeared in the burning bush, communicated to him, the name which he should give as the credentials of his mission: "And God said unto Moses, "I AM THAT I AM (ehyea asher ehyeh); and he said, 'Thus you shall say unto the children of Israel, I AM has sent me unto you.'

“I AM WHO I AM” – “JEHOVAH” – the God who keeps His Covenant and execute it

"I AM THAT I AM" is the key of the name Jehovah (Exodus 3:14), expressing unchanging Being. (Confirmed in Jesus: Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever)

Moses spoke of Jesus Christ when he declared:

Deu 18:15 "The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him.

Very significant – the bold declaration of Jesus in John 8:58 that He is the “I AM”

Joh 8:56 "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad."

Joh 8:57 So the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?"

Joh 8:58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I AM."

Jesus now confirms in seven “I AM” statements that He is now the visible tangible “Jehovah” expression of God in the earth to lead the world out of the bondage of sin into the freedom of the promises of God.

1) Jesus as: the Bread of Life:

Joh 6:35 And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes on Me shall never thirst.

Joh 6:48 I am the Bread of life.

Joh 6:53 Then Jesus says to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His blood, you do not have life in yourselves.

Joh 6:54 Whoever partakes of My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

Joh 6:55 For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed.

Joh 6:56 He who partakes of My flesh and drinks My blood dwells in Me, and I in him.

Joh 6:57 As the living Father has sent Me, and I live through the Father, so he who partakes of Me, even he shall live by Me.

Out of Jesus as the Bread of Life, flow all the spiritual nutrients that we require to live a Godly fruitful life.

That is also why He is called, “El Shaddai” – the “All-Sufficient One”, or rather the “Breastfeeding God”.

Every nutrient that a newborn baby might require is already contained within the mother. Similarly, everything that I need for my life is contained within God and is conveyed to me through Christ Jesus by the Holy Spirit.

2) Jesus as: the Light of the world:

Joh 8:12 Then Jesus spoke again to them, saying, I am the Light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life.

Joh 1:4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Joh 1:5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

Joh 1:6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

Joh 1:7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.

Joh 1:8 He was not that Light but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

Joh 1:9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.

Mat 5:14 You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. (We represent and reflect Him as light in this world).

Light is knowledge, understanding and wisdom and also the Energy of God.

3) Jesus as: the Door of the sheep:

Joh 10:7 Then Jesus said to them again, Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

Joh 10:8 All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.

Joh 10:9 I am the door. If anyone enters in by Me, he shall be saved and shall go in and out and find pasture.

Joh 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come so that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

(Actually:” ....that they might have life and abundance”)

Every open door and every breakthrough already exists in Christ.

4) Jesus as: the Good Shepherd:

Joh 10:11 I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

Joh 10:13 The hireling flees, because he is a hireling and does not care for the sheep.

Joh 10:14 I am the Good Shepherd, and I know those that are Mine, and I am known by those who are Mine.

As the Good Shepherd He is constantly taking care of me and taking responsibility over my life. He is my total Provision (and not only my Provider)

5) Jesus as: the Resurrection and the Life:

Joh 11:25 Jesus said to her, I am the Resurrection and the Life! He who believes in Me, though he dies, yet he shall live.

Joh 11:26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?

1Co 15:13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen.

1Co 15:14 And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty.

1Co 15:17 And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!

1Co 15:20 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

1Co 15:21 For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead.

1Co 15:45 And so it is written, "the first man Adam became a living being." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

1Co 15:54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "death is swallowed up in victory."

1Co 15:55 "o death, where is your sting? o Hades, where is your victory?"

1Co 15:56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.

1Co 15:57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Rom 4:24 but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead,

Rom 4:25 who was delivered up because of our offences, and was raised because of our justification.

6) Jesus as: the Way and the Truth and the Life:

Joh 14:6 Jesus said to him, I am the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except by (through) Me. (AMP)

7) Jesus as: the True Vine:

Joh 15:1 I am the True Vine, and My Father is the Vinedresser.

Joh 15:2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away. And every one that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bring forth more fruit.

Joh 15:3 Now you are clean through the Word which I have spoken to you.

Joh 15:4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.

Joh 15:5 I am the Vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

Joh 15:6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered. And they gather and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

Joh 15:7 If you abide in Me, and My Words abide in you, you shall ask what you will, and it shall be done to you.

Joh 15:8 In this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, so you shall be My disciples.

There is a constant stream of His life-giving substance flowing through me enabling me to bring forth fruit and constant fruitfulness

2Pe 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,

2Pe 1:3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,

SECTION 7 – Other “I AM” statements & personifications concerning Jesus Christ

The “I AM” statements in the Book of Revelation

Rev 1:8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."

Rev 1:17 When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, "Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last,

Rev 1:18 and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades.

Rev 22:13 "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end."

Another personification of Jesus - Grace!

(This is explained in more detail in my Teaching on “GRACE”)

Grace is not a doctrine:

Grace is a Person and that Person is Jesus Christ our Lord!!

Grace is both a Person and a dynamic working, an action, an outflow and a powerful accomplishment coming from that Person – Jesus Christ!

Moses is the personification of the Law

Jesus Christ is the personification of the Grace and the Truth

Joh 1:14 And THE Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

The invisible Word (Who was in the beginning, Who was God and Who was with God) was created or formed into a person – Jesus Christ.

We behold the glory of this person Jesus Christ:

Behold: view attentively, contemplate, to look closely at, that is, to perceive with unceasing interest. "A careful and deliberate vision which interprets...its object,"

Glory (Gr: doxa) means:

Extract from “The Complete WordStudy Dictionary – E-Sword”

Primarily means thought or opinion, especially favourable human opinion. The “doxa” of man is human opinion and is shifty, uncertain, often based on error.

But there is a glory of God which must be absolutely true and changeless.

God's opinion marks the true value of things as they appear to the eternal mind, and God's favourable opinion is true glory.

Glory, therefore, is the true apprehension of God or things. The glory of God must mean His unchanging essence. Giving glory to God is ascribing to Him His full recognition.

The glory of God is what He is essentially; the glory of created things including man is what they are meant by God to be, though not yet perfectly attained.

Taken from: “Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words- E-Sword”

Primarily signifies thought or an opinion, estimate, and hence, the honour resulting from a good opinion.

God's favourable opinion is true glory. The glory of God means His unchanging essence. Glory, therefore, is the true apprehension of God.

Giving glory to God is ascribing to Him His full recognition of who He is and ever will

It is used of the nature and acts of God in self-manifestation, i.e., what He essentially is and does, as exhibited in whatever way he reveals Himself in these respects, and particularly in the person of Christ, in whom essentially His "glory" has ever shone forth and ever will do.

Thus: Jesus Christ is the visible manifestation of God’s favourable opinion towards us.

This “manifested Word – or Glory” is full of grace and truth.

“Full” means: complete, lacking nothing, perfect, abounding or abundant. To thoroughly accomplish

The Word became flesh for the purpose of thoroughly accomplishing and applying all the qualities of Grace and Truth.

Christ Jesus also became for us:

1Co 1:30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us WISDOM from God—and RIGHTEOUSNESS and SANCTIFICATION and REDEMPTION
