INTRODUCTION:

Many times our behaviour is shaped and determined by what others say and think about us. Especially during childhood our social environment in which we grow up plays a pivotal role in regulating our future and determining our behaviour

If we would constantly be reminded of our wrong doings, mistakes and bad decisions it would definitely have a devastating effect on us. On the other hand, constant encouraging input in my life will result in a positive lifestyle. All input in my life could actually become self-fulfilling prophecies to me – subconsciously living up to the negative or positive expectations of other people.

If positive influence in my life could lead to a successful life imagine what amazing results will be brought forth if we could understand what God has done for us in Christ Jesus, what His opinion is about us and what He is saying about us. A deep knowledge and understanding of God’s opinion of me will lead to a life of perpetual success and victory – I will truly be able to walk in “eternal life – a life without limitations”

One example of how God’s opinion of a man can change the course of history

This amazing story of Gideon is recorded in Judges Chapters 6 to 8.

Israel was delivered into the hand of the Midianites and as a result of this, fell into poverty and fear. Gideon was threshing wheat in the winepress in order to hide it from the Midianites when the Angel of the Lord came to him and greeted him with these words:

“The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valour (courageous warrior)”.

Gideon objected to these words but the Lord turned to him and said: “Go in this might of yours and you shall save Israel from the hands of the Midianites. Have I not sent you?”

The answer that Gideon gave, gives us a clear indication of how Gideon saw himself:

“My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house”

You can read the whole story of how Gideon argued with the Lord in the Chapters mentioned and how he eventually submitted to the call of God on his life. Once he realised the power of God’s opinion and declaration over his life – “you are a mighty man of valour” and “go in the might of this declaration of who you truly are”– he fearlessly acted upon it and saved Israel from the hands of the Midianites in a most remarkable way. Gideon changed the course of history the moment he accepted God’s opinion of him.

SECTION 1

God’s opinion of us was established at creation and re-established and re-affirmed in Jesus Christ

God’s opinion of his creation

In the “First Dispensation Teaching” on “Created in His image to function in His likeness” I describe in detail how wonderfully God created us, what awesome abilities He placed inside of us and what His reaction on His own creative works was.

God’s reaction:

Gen 1:31 God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good.

[Amplified Bible: And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good (suitable, pleasant, fitting and admirable) and He approved it completely]

God had a favourable opinion of His own creation.

Whatever God creates or does – His opinion about it is of paramount importance, because when God approves of something it is backed by His omnipotence and the totality of His being and essence.

It is equally important to understand, to believe and to unconditionally accept and confess God’s opinion about us – it is a matter of life and death. (Confess means: to say exactly what God says about something or someone, i.e. “to agree with God on the subject)

An amazing Scripture underpinning God’s opinion of man

Psa 8:3 When I view and consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained and established,

Psa 8:4 What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of [earthborn] man that You care for him?

Psa 8:5 Yet You have made him but a little lower than God [or heavenly beings], and You have crowned him with glory and honour.

Psa 8:6 You made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet: (AMP)

Also quoted in Hebrews 2:6-8

Heb 2:6 But a certain writer has given his witness, saying, What is man, that you keep him in mind? what is the son of man, that you take him into account?

Heb 2:7 You made him a little lower than the angelsyou gave him a crown of glory and honour, and made him ruler over all the works of your hands:

Heb 2:8 You put all things under his feet. (BBE)

Is God angry with us?

I would say that God was angry with mankind after Adam and Eve fell in sin – at that moment His wrath was unleashed over the earth. But God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son so that none should perish and everybody could have eternal life.

Jesus proclaimed i n John 10:10 that the thief came to steal, destroy and to kill, but that He (Jesus) came to give us life and abundance.

Jesus Christ came to this earth to change God’s opinion about me again to a favourable one.

If God is for us, who can be against us (and rest assured – God is for us)!!

Rom 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Rom 8:32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

Rom 8:33 Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies.

All things work together for good to those who love God – we love Him because He first loved us

Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Under the New Covenant God’s opinion of us is in direct relation to His opinion of His Son, Jesus Christ

Mat 12:18 Behold, My Servant Whom I have chosen, My Beloved in and with Whom My soul is well pleased and has found its delight. I will put My Spirit upon Him, and He shall proclaim and show forth justice to the nations.

Mar 1:9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

Mar 1:10 Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him;

Mar 1:11 and a voice came out of the heavens: "You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased."

Mar 9:2 Six days later, Jesus *took with Him Peter and James and John, and *brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them;

Mar 9:3 and His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them.

Mar 9:7 Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, "This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!"

2Pe 1:16 For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.

2Pe 1:17 For when He received honour and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, "This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased"--

Jesus is God’s answer to this world

1Co 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness,

1Co 1:24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

1Co 1:30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,

Col 1:19 For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him,

Col 2:9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,

Col 2:10 and in Him you have been made complete,

Eph 3:14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father,

Eph 3:15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name,

Eph 3:16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man,

Eph 3:17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love,

Eph 3:18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,

Eph 3:19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

God chose His Son, Jesus Christ and chose and predestined us as sons to Himself through Jesus Christ (Recorded in Ephesians 1:3-5)

Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,

Eph 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love

Eph 1:5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will,

Surely the prophecy spoken by Jeremiah has come into fulfilment in Jesus Christ

Jer 29:11 'For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the LORD, ' plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.

The result of this awesome work of Christ in us is that God again has an extremely favourable opinion of us. If we are unable to grasp the reality and the depth of His opinion of us we would never be able to walk in victory.

I, therefore, have deemed it necessary to pin down every opinion that God has about me (taken mainly from the New Testament) and invite you to engage with me on this awesome journey through the Bible.

SECTION 2

The Holy Spirit is the agent of this defining revelation of grace, i.e. God’s opinion of us – He unveils the deep things of God so that we can live in it

Rom 16:25 Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past,

Rom 16:26 but now is manifested,

1Co 2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory,

1Co 2:8 which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

1Co 2:9 But as it is written: "eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love him."

1Co 2:10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

1Co 2:11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

1Co 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

Joh 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.

Joh 15:26 "When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,

Joh 15:27 and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.

Joh 16:7 "But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

Joh 16:12 "I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

Joh 16:13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

Joh 16:14 "He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.

I urge you to pray the following prayer daily

Ephesians 1:17-21

“I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may grant me a spirit of wisdom and revelation (of insight into mysteries and secrets) in the deep and intimate knowledge of You, by having the eyes of my heart flooded with light, so that I can know and understand the hope to which You have called me, and that I can know what are the riches of the glory of Your inheritance in me.

I pray that I would be able to know and understand through Your Spirit, what is the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of Your power in and for me who believe, as demonstrated in the working of Your mighty strength, which You exerted in Christ when You raised Him from the dead and seated Him at Your right hand in the heavenly places - far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named.”

SECTION 3

The Glory of God holds the key

The Bible is very clear about this: in Christ we have been predestined, called, justified and glorified:

Rom 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Rom 8:30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

It is of the utmost importance that we understand the meaning of “being glorified by God”

A SHORT STUDY IN THE MEANING OF “GLORY” AND “GLORIFY”

The Greek word for glory is “doxa” (G1391) and primarily signifies:

A favourable opinion,

- an estimate,

- a judgment and a view concerning someone.

Another very important meaning of the noun dóxa in Scripture is:

- Recognition

In the New Testament “glory” always denotes a good opinion resulting in recognition and praise and honour.

Glory is thus:

“The honour bestowed resulting from a good opinion”.

God's opinion marks the true value of things. So God’s favourable opinion of me designates the value He places on me – priceless and indescribable!

THE GLORY OF GOD:

God's favourable opinion is true glory and is absolutely changeless

His glory means His unchanging essence, His infinite perfection, divine majesty and holiness.

“Dóxa” portrays all which is excellent in the divine nature and is used of the “nature and acts of God in self-manifestation and self-revelation”, i.e., who He essentially is and what He essentially does, as exhibited in whatever way He chooses to reveal Himself in these respects.

The glory of God is the revelation and manifestation of all that He has and all that He is - it is a Self-revelation in which God manifests all the goodness that is His.

God’s greatest revelation of His glory is in the person of Christ. God’s glory has ever shone forth in and through Jesus Christ and ever will do.

Giving glory to God is ascribing to Him His full recognition.

When I glorify God, I magnify, extol and praise Him – I ascribe honour to Him and recognize Him for Who and What He is. I celebrate Him with praises, worship and adoration while acknowledging Him as to His being, attributes and acts.

GOD IS A GOD OF GLORY

A few Scriptures to confirm this:

Act 7:2 And he said, "Brethren and fathers, listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran,

Rom 1:23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God

Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

In Romans 3:23 the word “glory” denotes the manifested perfection of His character, especially His righteousness, of which all men fall short

The expression “they come short of [or lack] the glory of God," means they are not what God intended them to be. They lack His image and character and therefore His favourable opinion and recognition

"The praise of the glory of His grace" and "the praise of His glory" signify the due acknowledgement of the exhibition of God’s attributes and ways

Eph 1:6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.

Eph 1:12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.

Eph 1:14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

God as "the Father of glory" is the source from whom all divine splendour and infinite perfection flow in their manifestation – all glory belongs to Him.

Eph 1:17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,

God’s glory is full of wealth and abundance and power

Eph 3:16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man,

Col 1:11 Full of strength in the measure of the great power of his glory, so that you may undergo all troubles with joy; (BBE)

GOD'S GLORY REVEALS ITSELF IN AND THROUGH JESUS CHRIST

A few Scriptures emphasising the glory of God exhibited in and through Christ

Joh 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Joh 2:11 This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

Joh 11:4 When Jesus heard that, He said, "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it."

Joh 11:40 Jesus said to her, "Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?"

Joh 17:4 I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.

Joh 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

Joh 17:24 "Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

Rom 6:4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so, we also should walk in newness of life.

1Co 2:8 the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory;

2Co 4:6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Heb 1:3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power,

1Pe 1:20 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you

1Pe 1:21 who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

2Pe 1:17 For He received from God the Father honour and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

CHRIST GLORIFIED

The glory of God is the revelation and manifestation of all that He has and all that He is - it is a Self-revelation in which God manifests all the goodness that is His.

In so far as it is Christ through whom this glory is made manifest, He is said to glorify the Father, or the Father is glorified in Him

Joh 12:28 "Father, glorify Your name." Then a voice came out of heaven: "I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again."

Joh 17:1 Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You,

Joh 17:4 "I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do.

Joh 13:31 Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus *said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him;

Joh 13:32 if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately.

Joh 14:13 "Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

Some more Scriptures and elaboration on the glorification of Jesus

The glorifying of Jesus Christ means the revelation of that which He is in the mind of the Father.

When Christ is glorified by His Father it means simply that His innate glory is brought to light, is made manifest - It is an act of God the Father in and through Him

Joh_7:39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Joh_11:4 But when Jesus heard this, He said, "This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it."

Joh_12:23 And Jesus *answered them, saying, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

Joh_17:10 and all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them.

Joh 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

Joh 17:24 "Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

Act_3:13 "The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus, the one whom you delivered and disowned in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him.

Heb 5:4 And no one takes the honour to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even as Aaron was.

Heb 5:5 So also Christ did not glorify Himself so as to become a high priestbut He who said to Him, "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU";

The Holy Spirit plays a significant role through His revelatory work in glorifying Jesus

MAN GLORIFIED

God displays his glory through us (His favourable opinion which he exhibits in Christ) – He openly declares his favourable opinion of us

The glory of God is the revelation and manifestation of all that He has and all that He is - it is a Self-revelation in which God manifests all the goodness that is His in and through us who are in Christ.

The glory of man (God’s favourable opinion of man) is the ideal condition in which God created man – we were created in His image and according to His likeness. This condition was lost in the fall and is recovered and restored through Christ and exists as truth in our lives – we again enjoy and display the favourable opinion of God.

Psa 8:3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained;

Psa 8:4 What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him?

Psa 8:5 Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty!

Psa 8:6 You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet,

The glory of God is what He essentially is and the glory of created things including man is what they are meant by God to be.

Heb 2:10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.

We are glorified together with Christ – His glory is displayed in us – revealing us as sons of God for the purpose of answering the earnest expectation of creation.

Rom 8:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

Rom 8:17 and if children, then heirs--heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

Rom 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us (the glory that is about to be revealed to us and in us and for us and conferred on us!)

Rom 8:19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.

Rom 8:20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope;

Rom 8:21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

As we behold the glory of the Lord we are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another – ever expressing the favourable opinion of God about us in the earth

2Co 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

The Bible calls God’s favourable opinion of us an everlasting weight of glory

2Co 4:17 For our light, momentary affliction (this slight distress of the passing hour) is ever more and more abundantly preparing and producing and achieving for us an everlasting weight of glory [ beyond all measure, excessively surpassing all comparisons and all calculations, a vast and transcendent glory and blessedness never to cease!], (AMP)

We are God’s workmanship

Eph 2:10 For we are God's [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anewthat we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live].(AMP)

Praise God!! – We obtained and share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ

2Th 2:13 But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.

2Th 2:14 It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. (So that you may obtain and share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ)

We are called to God’s eternal glory by Christ Jesus

1Pe 5:10 But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.

2Pe 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;

2Pe 1:3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.

It is of the utmost importance that we understand the meaning of “being glorified by God”

Rom_8:17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

When God glorifies His people He is openly demonstrating His approval of them and His interest in them, by His interposition on their behalf. In God’s glorification of us, the innate glory of Christ is brought to light, is made manifest through us.

Glorification” is the result flowing from the favourable opinion which God forms and means:

- God exalts us in dignity,

- He renders us excellent,

- He recognizes and honours us,

- He invests us with dignity,

- He esteems us highly by putting us into an honourable position

- We are highly favoured by Him

We are so privileged and blessed – let us walk and live boldly in His declaration over us

2Pe 1:3 For His divine power has bestowed upon us all things that [are requisite and suited] to life and godliness, through the [full, personal] knowledge of Him Who called us by and to His own glory and excellence (virtue).
